As you can see in this article from Search Engine Land, private blog networks (known as PBNs) are a great way to get your site penalized by Google. Google has been fighting to discover and take down private blog networks (PBNs). This means they do not allow links from PBNs to be included in their search.
Why does Google not like PBNs? PBNs provide no long-term value to websites they are linking to. A Private Blog Network (PBN) is viewed as a scheme. In other words, PBNs are pure black hat SEO tactics. Black hat SEO tactics are not what you want for your site. Being identified as a site regularly utilizing or publishing to private blog networks results in a direct loss of search engine ranking. Some may be lucky enough to be warned with a manual penalty from Google.
How to identify private blog networks
Use sources like SpyOnWeb.com or similar tools to identify if the links your site has been published to are all being hosted by the same IP address.
Similarly, you can use WHOIS data to discover if the same contact information is public for all sites. Please note that this information can be privatized. Hosts allow users to pay for private listings of domains.
A more visual way of assuming if your links are all hosted on the same private blog network is to determine if all sites have the same, generic website design such as navigation usage, color, and layout. An additional indicator is the reuse of similar or same images over and over again across blog sites.
One good test is to copy key phrases and paragraphs into Google search to see if your same content is hosted on multiple websites.
